21 Day Fix

Where to begin? There are so many awesome details to include about the 21 Day Fix. First, let me start off by saying I was extremely skeptical about this and really any other diet “fads” trending right now. I have tried so many before, but nothing stuck long term and I had eventually gained any weight I had loss.

I am not a personal trainer or a fitness expert, but I do have success from using the 21 Day Fix eating/workout plan and can speak from my own experience.

I participated in a 21 Day Fix Challenge in 2014 and saw results, but fell into a rut from a busy school year being a teacher and coaching basketball. I wasn’t as motivated as I should have been and stopped checking in with my accountability group to keep me on track.

In January of 2015, 4 months before my wedding, I knew I needed to make some changes asap! I refused to not feel my best on the day of my wedding. I decided to enter another 21 Day Fix Challenge and couldn’t have been happier with the results.

Here’s the run down of the program…

The program lasts for 21 days, hence the name. It has been proven in studies that it takes 21 days to adapt to new, healthier habits, and to get rid of the bad ones. I think the word “fix” is used because it fixes our minds and the way we view food and working out in a positive light. I ordered the program which was $160 which sounded like a lot, especially being a teacher, BUT it included ALL of the following:

1) Food containers (I’ll explain more)

2) 8 work out DVDs…one for each day of the week PLUS a PiYo bonus DVD

3) Eating booklet which outlines exactly what foods go into which container

4) A 30 day supply of Shakeology

5) Informational packets that suggest Shakeology recipes, food recipes, nutritional value, and words of encouragement

6) Shakeology shake drink container

There are 6 different colored containers for 6 different types of foods, or food groups and a teaspoon category for oils, nut butters, and seed butters. The green container is for veggies, purple for fruits, red for protein, yellow for carbs/starches, blue for cheese, nuts, avocados and coconut, and orange for seeds and dressings.

Depending on how many calories you should be eating (they give you a formula for determining that), you have a certain amount of containers per food group each day. Again, they give you a chart that outlines all of this. For example, I am allotted 3 green, 2 purple, 4 red, 2 yellow, 1 blue, 1 orange, and 2 teaspoons.

This may not sound like a lot, but I still sometimes have a hard time eating all of the food because the foods are whole foods and there is a lot of protein, both which fill me up immensely. I’ve learned to be creative in how to fit in all of the food each day. That’s why this program works and is so great, you feel FULL and not starving! Plus, there are tons of recipes online to try out!

Another crucial aspect of the program aside from the food containers is drinking Shakeology once a day. Check out some of my posts about the benefits of Shakeology. Not only is Shakeology delicious, but it helps me eat all 4 servings of protein. I always mix 1 serving of Shakeology (1 red) with some greek yogurt (1 red) plus some fruit such as bananas, strawberries, and raspberries (1 purple). The shakes not only keep me full, but they also curb my appetite for anything sweet.

On top of drinking Shakeology every day and following the food plan, there is 1 30 minute workout to complete each day. 30 minutes is totally doable! If you are apprehensive about the workouts because you are brand new to working out, there are modifications throughout so don’t worry. I used modifications the first 9 days and I still saw great results.

Typically when you participate in the 21 Day Fix you are assigned a coach either through the Beachbody website if you don’t know any coaches, or through someone you do know (PS…I’m a coach!). Your coach will enter you in what is called a 21 Day Fix Challenge. These challenges are private groups via Facebook (if you don’t have Facebook, e-mail correspondence works too) meant for accountability, encouragement, recipe swapping, and inspiration. Your coach will lead you through the program each day and be there for support and any questions you may have.

The biggest obstacle I had to overcome was the scale. This program teaches you to eat the right amount of foods and exercise, therefore, it isn’t all about the number but instead how you LOOK (inches) and FEEL. I had lost 7 lbs, but lost even more inches (9). When I went for my final dress fitting for my wedding the seamstress almost had a heart attack because she had to take my dress in so much.

I had someone in my challenge group lose 13 lbs and 10 inches. That is a HUGE accomplishment!

There is NO calorie counting which took a huge amount of pressure and anxiety off of me. I am now totally against counting calories. It does nothing but eventually discourage you and dictate your mood. I remember being absolutely miserable if I went over my daily calorie goal…even if it was just 100 calories. At the same time, I would be happy to be below my calorie goal and think that was an excuse to indulge…which would make me go over again, and then I’d be miserable. It is a vicious cycle!

Also, there is room to “cheat” because let’s be honest. We are all human. You can substitute 3 yellow containers per week for 3 glasses of wine or 3 small treats.

There is even an app for this which is extremely user friendly and helps you stay on track all day. It is called 21 day FIT Tracker. It reminds you what foods go into what container, has a log section where you log each day for 21 days the food containers you have eaten, includes a 3 day quick fix (3 day intensive food plan for the very end of the challenge) and a maintenance section so when you have reached your goal, you can maintain it.
